Who makes Tesla?

Tesla Motors is a US car maker and energy storage company headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The auto manufacturer focuses on making electric cars and their powertrain components.

When Tesla Roadster was unveiled in 2008, the company immediately became known all over the world. In four years the Model S appeared, followed by Model X three years later.

Out of the four co-founders of the company, Elon Musk is probably the most well-known person. He is also the company’s CEO now. In 2016 Musk claimed that he does not consider selling Tesla motors and he sees it as an independent company. He also acknowledged that he wants Tesla cars to become less expensive eventually and, therefore, affordable to an average driver.

Where is Tesla made?

Tesla Motors is very proud of its principal production facility, which is situated in south Fremont, California. The Tesla Factory occupies more than 5 million square feet (including office space), while the number of employees exceeds 6,000.

History of the Tesla Factory

Tesla Factory is not the first car manufacturing facility located at this site. The car plant itself was built more than 50 years ago by GM. In 1984 Toyota formed a joint venture with GM and also started to make its vehicles here. The plant was renamed New United Motor Manufacturing. One of its best years was 1997, when more than 357,000 vehicles rolled off the assembly line.

Tesla purchased the factory in 2010. Before that, the company considered building Tesla manufacturing plants in Albuquerque, New Mexico and San Jose, California, but these projects were not brought to life.

The first Model S was manufactured in summer 2012, and prior to this, the factory underwent extensive remodeling. Some of the changes include introduction of state of the art robots that now take an active part in making Tesla cars.

The factory was upgraded in summer 2014, and during this process it even stopped making cars for a while.

What cars are made at the Tesla Factory?

In addition to Model S, the company started to make Model X at the same plant in 2015. By the middle of summer 2015 Tesla managed to manufacture over 21,400 cars at the Fremont plant.

The company is going to start mass production of Model 3 at the end of 2017. Prior to it, the factory will be remodeled. Tesla promised to spend $1.26 billion on this project.

It is common knowledge that most car makers use parts produced by other companies. Tesla also has over 290 suppliers, but still in most cases it sticks to the parts made by its own Tesla manufacturing plant.
