Who makes Jeep?
Jeep has been a division of FCA US LLC (Chrysler Group) since 1987, so the vehicles sold under this brand are produced at the manufacturing facilities of FCA. The hand-built prototype of the first Jeep (which was called the BRC back then) was made by a freelance designer Karl Probst in 1940. Soon Ford “Pygmy” and Willys “Quad” prototypes were introduced, and in 1945 the first civilian models were built.
Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is assembled at Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, uses transmissions made at Toledo North Assembly. Although Jeep Wrangler is assembled in Toledo Supplier Park, it uses parts sourced from other places. For instance, transmissions for this model are built not only in the US, but also in Mexico and Brazil.
Where is Jeep made?
In 2016 Jeep was named the most American-made brand by information services company Experian Automotive. According to the study made by Experian nearly 96% of Jeeps on US roads are assembled at Jeep manufacturing plants in the same country.
Engines for almost all the models are made in the US, including Compass, Liberty, Patriort, Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited. However, engines for Grand Cherokee are made not only in the US, but also in Mexico, while Grand Cherokee SRT8’s engines are produced only in Mexico. Transmission for the Liberty, the Grand Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee SRT are made in the US, while transmissions for the Patriot, the Wrangler and the Wrangler Unlimited are manufactured in Mexico, the US, and Brazil.
All the cars mentioned above are assembled in the US: in Toledo, Ohio (Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited), Belvidere, Illinois (Compass and Patriot), or Detroit, Michigan (Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee SRT8).
A small number of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 and the Grand Cherokees are made in Venezuela, while the Liberty, the J8, and the TJL-J8 are built by a joint venture in Egypt.
